General Knitting

Where a Knitting Kit is mentioned, you should bring the following items:

Must have: various sizes crochet hooks (based on yarn you are working with), ruler, scissors, pencil, large and small tapestry (blunt or darning) needles (we prefer bent-tip needles).

Nice to have: point protectors (if you use them), sticky notes, cable needle, row counter, stitch markers (including locking stitch markers), calculator, stitch holders, needle gauge, tape measure.


3511 Focus on Fit

Dates, 2009: Sundays, January 25, February 8 and 22, March 8 and 29, April 29, May 3 and 31, 10 am to 1 pm, eight sessions

This class is all about making a sweater that fits. Learn exactly what ease means, how different styles suit different body types, how to substitute yarns, how to change the gauge, and how bust and waist shaping can make a big difference.

Required books: Knitter's Book of Finishing Techniques by Nancy Wiseman, Handy Book of Sweater Patterns by Ann Budd.

Required supplies and equipment: for first class: 200 yards light colored, smooth, worsted weight yarn, US 7 needles, notepaper, tape measure, calculator

We provide: handouts and three approximately 50-yard yarn samples.

Prehomework: Bring your favorite knit top or sweater, handknit or commercial - the one that makes you feel like a million bucks!

3510 Focus on Shetland Lace

Dates, 2009: Saturdays, January 31, February 28, March 1 and 22, May 9 and 30 + one date TBD 8 am to 10 am, six sessions

We will learn about the Shetland style of knitting, the island traditions, and designing within the tradition. We'll spend a bit of time familiarizing ourselves with the rhythm by swatching center and border patterns. Students will design a project of their own choosing and begin to knit it.

Required book: Heirloom Knitting by Sharon Miller

Required supplies and equipment: To start you'll need two balls Jamieson's Shetland Ultra Lace yarn, double pointed needles, US size 3. As the class progresses, you will likely need more lace weight yarn and you will also need supplies for your final project.

1524 Sampler Afghan

Dates, 2008 into 2009: First Sunday, November 2 through June 7, 2009, 12 pm to 2 pm, eight sessions

Start simple and work your way up in the level of difficulty. Choose one color (buy all your yarn at one time!) or choose multiple colors (buy it as you go). We are using the Sampler Afghan booklet - our afghan is on the chair in the sitting area. It is very comfy. At the rate of two squares per month, you can have an afghan done in less than a yearr. Remember: squares are very portable. Since they are small, they don't become too hot to knit on in the summer time. You may also use your Drop-In card to attend these sessions (get six visits for the price of five).

If you've always wanted to learn, there is no time like the present! This series of four classes introduces the basics via swatching and knitting a hat that places the techniques learned in a practical application

Required supplies and equipment: Bring 10" long non-metal single point needles size 7 or 8, one skein smooth, light colored worsted wool yarn for practice, and a loose leaf notebook to begin your knitting records. You will also need yarn and needles for your first hat but, we'll select those in class.

2560 Knitting Boot Camp

Dates: Tuesday, January 27, February 17, March 3, 17, 31, April 21, May 5 and 26, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, 8 sessions

Kick your knitting up a notch! Joan will lead you through knitting from beginning to end. Each session focuses on different swatches and builds a reference portfolio. For this class to be successful for you, you must have time to devote to the class work and be fairly comfortable with knitting. Please refer to our class progression recommendations on the website and in the shop for more details -- we want you to get the most from this learning experience.

Required supplies and equipment: Three skeins worsted weight wool yarn at least 200 yards each (two in white or cream and the other in a light color) such as Shepherd's Wool. Optional, different color of same yarn for making Teddy Bear Sweater - approx. 150 yards. Please no acrylics. US size 5 (3.75mm) and 7 (4.5mm) 8-inch double point needles (you may want two sets of the size 7s). Three small stitch holders. Tapestry needle (Chibi bent tip recommended). Scissors, seaming pins, calculator, crochet hook: US size E, note paper and pen, small amount wool roving or fiber fill, split ring and locking stitch markers, ruler and tape measure, marking tags with string (recommended Avery 11012, size 2-3/4" by 1-11/16" available at Staples), and a 3-inch loose leaf notebook with sheet protectors.

2703 Chippy Socks for Kids (You can't knit just one pair!)

Dates: Saturday, March 7, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, one session

Kids totally love these socks, and so do Mommies and Grandmas. Choose 3 colors of yarn and knit up this set of sort-of-match, sort-of-don't socks. They knit up fast because they are a joy to create. Any kid would love to wear these!

Required supplies and equipment: Three 50gm balls of DK-weight washable yarn, in contrasting colors. Contrast can be dark/light, warm/cool, or a combination. Consider Heirloom Easy-Care 8 or Comfort DK as possible options. Instructor will help those wishing assistance with color choices, at beginning of class. Size 3 DPNs, set of 4. May use other needle setups for sock knitting (magic loop, etc.) if you are able to work with them without instructor input. If you know you habitually knit more firmly or more relaxed than a typical gauge, adjust needle size accordingly. Pattern provided.

1546 Cast On/Bind Off

Dates: Saturday, March 7, 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm, one session

Are you stuck in a knitting rut? Do you always use a long tail or knitted cast on? This class will show you how to work a: tubular cast on and invisible bind off - perfect for creating stretchy necklines, figure-8 cast on for sock toes and other beginnings; a Channel-Isle cast on for lasting sweater edges; and a stretchy bind off for lace knitting. Time permitting, we'll try a few others, too.

Required supplies and equipment: Participants should bring with them: smooth, light colored worsted weight yarn and US size 5 and size 7 double pointed needles, tapestry needle, scissors.

3503 Estonian Garden Scarf (or Wrap)

Sunday, March 15, 10 am to 4 pm, one session

Fascinated by the Lily of the Valley pattern? This scarf uses it as a spectacular accent. Designed following traditional Estonian style, it uses three different lace patterns. You'll learn the secret to making good nupps (Estonian two-row bobbles), what mistakes can be fixed and which ones must be ripped, and how to avoid mistakes in the first place.

Required supplies and equipment: Pattern FT-043, supplies per pattern (you may choose larger yarn than the pattern calls for; I used a double knitting weight yarn and one size larger needle for a warmer wrap). Bring yarn similar in weight to what you have chosen for your scarf for practicing.

Pre-class homework: Practice knitting the lace pattern for the body of the scarf. Work it until you are comfortable doing it and don't need to refer to the pattern.

2556 Wonderful Wooly Wallaby

This sweater is a perennial favorite for kids and grown ups alike. Learn special techniques that include pockets and i-cord. You'll also learn how to keep track of where you are in a pattern and tips for making your increases and decreases look more uniform.

Required supplies and equipment: Wallaby Pattern from Cottage Creations, yarn and needles for the size you are making (we strongly recommend making a baby-sized version for the class).

Learn to knit a Norwegian sweater from an expert knitter and designer. Arnhild will help you get started knitting a child or adult-sized Norwegian style cardigan. Though not difficult, there are some tricks to knitting with more than one color at a time, setting sleeves and steeking, for example, that you will want to know. Versatile Scarves

2529 "Travel" to the Shetlands

Dates: Saturday, March 28, 10:30 am to 5:00 pm, sessions

The closest most of us will ever get to the Shetlands is knitting like they do! Learn how to knit with two yarns in the Fair Isle style using two hands or one hand, explore color by working swatches from over 100 colors of yarn provided by the instructor, and then cast on for your own hat based on your color findings. We'll have fun and you'll be surprised at how the color inspires you!

Required supplies and equipment: Participants should bring with them: US Size 3 double point and 16" circular needles, scissors, erasable colored pencils (the bigger the set the better!). Strongly recommended: one of the currently available Shetland Knitting books that includes a hat pattern. In class: be prepared to purchase 5 to 7 balls of Shetland yarn for making your hat. Included in class fee is yarn for sampling and practicing.

0404 Understanding Yarn and Fibers

Dates: Friday, April 17, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. 1 session

Have you struggled with trying to match a yarn to a project? This class will give you hands-on experience in making a fiber selection. We'll look at the properties of all of the common fibers and you will receive a knittable (or weavable on a Weavette) sample of many. In addition, we'll talk about fiber blends - what works and what doesn't, weights of yarn according to various systems, and spinning and plying styles. Not just a lecture - you will have a piece of yarn in your hands that you can look at and feel as its properties are discussed.

Required supplies and equipment: Bring all your knitting needles. If you do not knit, bring a small Weavette or prewarped rigid heddle with a narrow warp set at 10 or 12 epi with fingering weight wool or cotton.
