SUMMARY:Building a Spinner's Portfolio to Become a Better Spinner - class 4 of 9
DESCRIPTION:Day/Date/Time: Saturdays\, 3/15\, 4/12\, 5/17\, 6/21\, 7/19\, 8/23\, 9/20\, 10/25\, and 11/22/25\, from 10:00 am to Noon. This class meets 9 times. \nDescription: A series of workshops and exercises designed to improve spinning skills and knowledge. The goal of this series is to fine tune your own spinning abilities and to be able to plan for and complete a project using your own handspun yarn. Throughout this series\, you will be working on building a portfolio of skills through exercises designed to help you fine tune your skills and document your progress. \nMost of the topics will be presented in lecture format with demonstration. You will be given assignments to be completed on your own time between classes\, with support through a dedicated online Facebook forum between lectures. Lectures will be once per month. Previous assignments will be reviewed at each lecture and must be completed\, as skills build on each other in this program. Expect to spend at least 1 hour/week on homework. Most days students will be able to stay and spin after class is over. \nTopics Covered: \n\nAll About Your Spinning Wheel\nThick and Thin : Discovering the range of your wheel\nWorsted spinning\nWoolen spinning\nBalanced plying\nMeasurement tools/ How to describe your yarn\nRecreating a commercial yarn\nIs it project worthy?\nBringing it All Together – Designing a project\n\nRequired supplies/equipment/books: Spinning Wheel (either traditional or e wheel) in good working order. 3-inch 3 ring binder or large penda flex folder for your portfolio. Optional: 3X5 notecards\, hole punch\, spiral notebook for your own notes. \n*Class fee does not include material fees of $20.00 to $40.00 per session that will be payable to instructor at the beginning of each class. Materials include lecture notes and sample folders\, as well as 2-4 oz of wool each month to complete monthly assignments. \nPrerequisite: Students should be reasonably comfortable with using the wheel they have and able to spin a single and ply two singles together before taking the class. \nInstructor: Summer Swanwick \nMaximum: 6 students \n*Fee: $400.00 (does not include materials fees – see required supplies for more information) \n

SUMMARY:Learn to Weave in a Weekend - 4-day class
DESCRIPTION:Day/Date/Time: Friday through Monday: June 20-23\, 2025. This class meets for four days. \nFriday\, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, Sunday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Monday\, 9:00 am to Noon. \nDescription: Learn to weave on a multi-shaft loom in one (long) weekend. Class is a combination of lecture and weaving. The class covers yarn selection and preparation (winding a warp)\, dressing the loom (attaching the warp to the loom)\, reading a pattern\, weaving and finishing. From one warp you will weave a sampler experimenting with different patterns. Class fee includes loom usage\, yarn for the class project\, a comprehensive workbook\, a take-home weaving toolbox filled with all the “extras” that a weaver needs plus access to the instructional videos for two weeks following the class. No additional supplies or books are required. \nRequired supplies/equipment/books: Socks or slippers to wear while weaving (bare feet are fine\, but you will not wear shoes while weaving). \nPrerequisite: None \nPre-Class Prep: You will find it helpful to read weaving magazines – current and back issues. Even if what you are reading raises more questions\, persevere! Write down your questions and we will work to answer them in class. Mindfully begin to notice fabric – how woven fabric differs from knit fabric\, how colors work together (or not!). Notice upholstery fabrics\, clothes in your closet or on racks at the store. The more you think like a weaver\, the more you will BE a weaver.
