Fair Isle Day 2024

Day/Date/Time: Sunday, 7/28/2024 from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm.

Agenda: Tea and scones from 9:00 to 10:00 am; Class Sessions from 10:00 am to noon and 1:00 to 3:00 pm; Prizes and Peerie Makker video at 3:00 pm. Participants are on their own for lunch.

This event is a learning event with all proceeds donated to the Shetland Peerie Maker program that teaches youngsters in Shetland to knit. Led by volunteers, children learn at after school programs. Our donation helps keep this tradition alive in a very real way. Meanwhile, on this side of the ocean, we will be learning, too.

We have options for those that would like to learn to knit in the Fair Isle style, those that would like to darn stranded knitting, and a lace sampler of border motifs. There will also be a demo in knitting with a knitting belt, a goodie bag for each participant, and even a few door prizes.

Click on the level that interests you to visit our web store for details and to register:

Level 1: Introduction to Fair Isle   Students will learn how to knit with two colors at one time and make a headband. Students will need to select two contrasting colors of jumper weight yarn prior to the event. Yarn is not included in the fee, but handouts are. Limited to 6.

Level 2: Plan a Fair Isle Sweater  If you’ve always wanted to knit a traditional (not yoked) Fair Isle cardigan, pullover or vest, Cherie can help! Whether you are wondering if the pattern you have been considering will really fit or you want to design your own, you will learn the important measurements you need, variations you can make, as well as fit and finishing details that can make or break your garment. Limited to 10.

Level 3: Shawl Borders  A second taste of lace. Traditionally haps were often knit from the outside in. Last year we knit edgings, this year we will knit a border sampler. Students should select one skein of the size of yarn they are comfortable working with: Shetland Ultra, 2 Ply Supreme or Cobweb. Limited to 8

Fee: $75.00

Volunteer Instructors: Mary Brandau, Cherie Cornick, Debbie Wood, Joan Sheridan
